This route of contemporary Visual Arts is concentrated in the area of Old Havana, which will allow you to enjoy the walking tour through its squares and streets of the historic center. Conceptually we will show you an overview of visual arts in Havana where the most institutional vision of art (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Instituto Superior de Arte) is mixed along with more alternative proposals such as Espacio Seis-Seis Estudio de Arte Contemporáneo and Triana y Usich.
Its plastic expressions attest to a convulsive and fruitful artistic-cultural atmosphere; full of artists, collectors, institutions, alternative projects and events that guarantee the continuity of visual arts in Cuba. Knowing that artistic framework from within, its operation and development, is an opportunity that can be lived both from the state perspective, and from the private sphere.
Accompanied by an independent tour guide, graduated in art history and professor at the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the University of Habana, you will know the attractive and multicultural scene of Habana from its art and its artists. It is lovely to know the city through the eyes of the creators who live there; who have imagined it again and again in canvases, sculptures, installations, performances, photographs, etc.
We will begin this interesting tour in Old Habana with a visit to Museo Nacional de Bellas Artesand specifically to Edificio Arte Cubano. A tour of its rooms will allow you to appreciate and learn about the main exponents of Cuban art from the colonial period to the present. You can also visit the store and buy some product if you wish.
You will have time to enjoy a cocktail or coffee at the bar El Dandy, located a short distance from the museum, in what was an old cellar, surrounded by excellent photographic art, an interesting collection of books and curious and ancient objects.
Then, we will move within the same area to learn about a contemporary Cuban art studio, the Espacio Seis-Seis Estudio de Arte Contemporáneo created in the framework of the XII Havana Biennial (2015) and reopened on July 1st, 2016. Here, you will have the opportunity to meet Sandra Contreras, her artistic director, who works with young and promising artists and will be happy to explain the trajectory of each featured artist.
Later we go to an art gallery in the heart of the Santo Ángel neighborhood, Espacio de arte Triana & Usich, where Pablo Ávila, the owner of the gallery and an artist himself, will guide us through a community collective with authentic pieces of deep meaning for Cuban culture.
Stop for lunch on the creative paladar Esto no es un Café, by the Plaza de la Catedral
To close the tour we will go to the Cubanacán neighborhood to know the academy where art professionals are trained in Cuba, the Instituto Superior de Arte. They will be able to enjoy an imposing author architecture and will also know four of their five faculties, interact with their students and enjoy the academic atmosphere that is breathed in one of the jewels of Cuban architecture.
For lunch we will stop at a "paladar" where you can taste an excellent traditional Cuban fusion food. The creative paladar Esto no es un Café, next to Plaza de la Catedral square. A tasty tribute to artists who have marked the history of art: for example, taste a pork loin marinated in mustard a.k.a. La fuente de Duchamp. You can also order: Pollock Chicken, decorated with parsley and soybeans, Christo's Fish, Lam's Third World, Blue Klein, etc.
All private field trips and city tours can be modified and adapted to the client's needs.
