Along the Mouth of the Yumurí

• You can choose to do this excursion by bicycle or by car.
• We will leave with a local guide at 8:00 from the city of Baracoa. The route is 28km to the Yumurí fishing village, along a flat road with excellent views.
• Our first stop will be at El Güirito, to get to know a cocoa plantation up close and learn about the benefits of chocolate.
• Returning to the road, we will make a stop at Playa Bariguá to refresh ourselves and take some time to rest.
• Once in Poblado Yumurí we will hike 450m to the first bend of the steep road to Montaña Boruga.
• One of the main attractions of this site is to take a cayuca (a traditional Baracoan boat) to visit the Isla de las Almendras, a cay nestled in the center of the canyon.
• We will stop at Playa Mangalito to have a tasty buffet by the sea.

Two of the most typical and tasty products of eastern Cuba are cocoa and coffee. Baracoa boasts the production of excellent quality cocoa. That is why we want you to know the peculiarities of the cocoa cultivation process, especially the one that takes place in El Güirito, a peasant community located 17 kilometers from the city of Baracoa.

You will have explanations from locals who are dedicated to the plantation of cocoa at Finca Las Mujeres, and of course you will be able to taste some ; as well as a delicious 100% Cuban coffee.

The water is shallow, so you can go out to sea and enjoy the ride while your legs relax to resume the bike route. On the way we will run into the Paso de los Alemanes, a kind of natural gate joined at the top by a rock between two mountains and that will take us to the Yumurí River.

In it, almost 2000 authentic pieces belonging to Taino groups have been found. You will have the opportunity to contemplate the representation of a Taino village, as well as a burial site with the respective funeral offerings.

The Yumurí canyon takes up ​​8.7 km2 of forests featuring fresh and transparent waters. The natural complex, located within the Protected Area that bears its name, is a true paradise for flora and fauna. Considered the Eden of speleology, it is a place carefully cared for by scientists and residents.

We will arrive here and climb to the viewpoint from where you can enjoy some lovely views of the Yumurí River. In the surrounding fruit trees you will find the beautiful polymites, snails endemic to Baracoa and unique in the world for their beautiful and bright colors.

Later we will get on a boat and visit the Isla de las Almendras, located between the canyons of the Yumurí River. It is a place whose name comes from the time of the Taino Indians. Legend has it that in the process of conquest, the Spanish wanted to colonize the area because they had heard about the riches of the place. During the walk you can take “postcard” photos, until you reach an area of ​​the same river where you can take a refreshing bath.

A buffet-style meal, prepared by chef Mileidys, awaits you on the seashore. Mileidys is a specialist when it comes to prepare fish with coconut milk, a regional culinary delight, and tetí, a tiny fish that is abundant only in this area of ​​the country.
